Yet Another Oriole has Passed Away

They say it comes in threes.  Well, today, I found out that 'Bullet' Bob Turley passed away today at the age of 82.  First, Mr. Trucks, then Gus Triandos and now Bob Turley.  Jeez.

Turley played for both the Browns and Orioles, and also the Yankees, Angels and Red Sox.  His best season was in 1958 with he won the Cy Young Award and finished second in the MVP voting.  He went 21-7 that season and 2-1 during the 1958 World Series against the Braves, winning the championship with the Yankees.

Turley was a great TTM signer, as seen by the signed baseball I got from him shown above.  It's really sad to see these guys passing away.  I guess it's up to us to keep their memories alive by continuing to tell their stories.

Amazing Mail From the Commish

Amazing.  I got an email the other day from Commish Bob saying he had some 1959 Topps cards for my want list.  I thought, cool, he will help me knock off two or three cards.  Heh.  I got more than two or three cards.  Try 45.
There weren't any huge stars, but there were some big names.  Like the above Elston Howard.  This is a really awesome card, even thought I am definitely not a Yankee fan.  I do appreciate their history and I know Howard was a key component of their history.
Here is one of another really good player, Rocky (Rocco) Colavito.  Power hitting Colavito played from 1955 to 1968 and hit 374 home runs over his career.  Not too bad!
Finally, here is one from a great TTM signer, Bob Turley.  Turley is also a former Yankee (blehh) but he is also a former Oriole (Yaaay!), and he signed a bell for me TTM a while back, so he is alright in my book.

I really don't know what to say, Commish Bob really came through for me and I really wasn't expecting it.  All of the cards he sent me were ones that had been upgraded in his set, but they fit right into mine, condition-wise.  I think there might be 2 out of the whole stack that I will end up changing out in the end.

Thanks, Commish!  I'm going to have to hook you up with some Orioles stuff, if I can part with any of it.  Thanks again!  Check out the Commish's blog, '59 Topps: one f/g card at a time.

TTM Success - Bob Turley

I got another TTM success today in 'Bullet' Bob Turley. Turley is my 25th TTM success. I mailed to him on August 10 and got him back today (August 20). That makes him a 10-day TAT. Not too bad! He signs TTM for free, by the way...I wrote about Turley here when I was profiling my 1955 Topps set. He was the Cy Young Award and World Series MVP winner in 1958 for the Yankees. I'm really happy I got this ball signed. Turley didn't play very long (12 seasons) but he did have a pretty nice career.

1955 Topps #38 - Bob Turley

Show of hands of anyone who knew that this dude won a Cy Young Award? Yeah, I thought so.

'Bullet' Bob Turley (b. 1930) pitched for the Browns/Orioles, Yankees, Angels and Red Sox from 1951, 1953-1963. His best year was 1958 when he went 21-7 for the Yankees. He was rewarded for that performance with the 1958 Cy Young Award. He was a part of two World Series winners (1956 and 1958) with the Yankees, winning the World Series MVP award in 1958. He was also a 3-time All Star ('54, '55, '58). He ended his career with a record of 101-85 and an ERA of 3.64 with 1,265 strikeouts.
