Tanner is more widely known as a manager. He managed in the majors from 1970 to 1988 for the White Sox, A's, Pirates, and Braves. He had a career managerial record of 404-414. He won the World Series managing the Pirates in 1979. That Pirate team won the series in 7 games against the Orioles. This World Series is still a sore subject for Oriole fans who were alive then. I wasn't, so it doesn't bother me too much, but I have heard that O's fans still lose sleep over it.
