Some More 87s For The Set

I added two more signed 1987 Topps to the set recently with a deal I made with a couple friends.  The above Keith Hernandez was obtained from my friend, Stefan, who has hooked me up with quite a few autos in the past.  I paid him $20 for this card, and it looks really nice.

I had gotten an email from my friend, Rich, who was looking for an unsigned Len Matuszek 87,  I found two right next to each other in my box, so I sent them both.  I'm glad I did, because Rich was nice enough to get one signed for me.

Thanks for the deals, guys!  I wouldn't be this far along with the set if it weren't for all of the help I have received along the way.

TTM Success - Stan Williams

I added some cool vintage cards to my autograph album with this TTM success from Stan Williams.  The above card is a 1963 Post.  I don't remember where I found the card, but I imagine it was at a card show.

Williams has some really neat handwriting.  I thought the cards looked really nice with his signature.

Williams (b. 1936) and I share a birthday, which I just found out.  He played in the majors from 1958 to 1965 and 1967 to 1972 for the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Twins, Cardinals and Red Sox.  He had a career record of 109-94 with 1,305 strike outs and a 3.48 ERA.  He was an All Star twice in 1960.  He won the World Series with the Dodgers in 1959.

I mailed to Williams on March 18 and got the cards back on March 25, for a 7-day TAT.

TTM Success - Gary Pettis

Another 1987 Topps came off of the list when I got this TTM success back from Gary Pettis.  I had also sent him a 1986 Topps, a 1990 Topps and a 1990 Topps Traded.

He signed the cards in a thin black pen, but they still look pretty nice.  The 1986 is a bit tough to see, but it scanned pretty decently.

Pettis (b. 1958) played in the majors from 1982 to 1992 for the Angels, Tigers, Rangers and Padres.  He had 855 hits, 21 home runs and a .236 batting average.  He was a Gold Gove Award winner in 1985, 1986 and 1988 to 1990.

I mailed to Pettis on February 6 via Astros Spring Training and got the cards back on March 23, for a 45-day TAT.

TTM Success - Jim Wohlford

Jim Wohlford's cards sat in my TTM box for a long, long time before I finally got around to sending to him.  When I did, I was able to cross a card off of my 1987 list, and also add a few other nice ones to the album, as well.

Along with the 87, I sent Topps cards from 1977 and 1978 and also a 1984 Fleer.  They all look great, which is nice.

Wohlford (b. 1951) played in the majors from 1972 to 1986 for the Royals, Brewers, Giants and Expos.  He had 793 hits, 21 home runs and a .260 batting average.

I mailed to Wohlford on February 27 and got the cards back on March 23, for a 24-day TAT.

TTM SUccess - Jim Bolger

I added a couple more 50s cards to my autograph album with this success from Jim Bolger.  I wanted another 1955 Topps represented, so I picked this one up.  It turned out nicely with Bolger's signature.

I also liked this 1959 Topps, and thought the green card would pop pretty well in the album.  I'm really glad that I completed both of these sets, and am now adding some of them to the autograph album.

Bolger (b. 1932) played in the majors from 1950 to 1951, 1954 to 1955 and 1957 to 1959 for the Reds, Cubs, Indians and Phillies.  He had 140 hits, 6 home runs and a .229 batting average.

I mailed to Bolger on March 5 and got the cards back on March 21, for a 16-day TAT.

Some 87 Topps For The Set

While I was away on my trip, I got a few packages in from some friends who are trying to help me with my 1987 Topps set.  Max has been the biggest contributor, and he sent me this Bud Black signed 87.  I have a TTM request out to Black from last year, but it is looking like it isn't going to come back, so having Max help knock this off of the list is very helpful.

I also accepted a 50/50 from a guy near Norfolk named Connor, and in return he got this Juan Nieves signed for me.  Nieves has a pretty simple auto, but it will cross a card off of the list anyway.

TTM Success - Tommy Brown

This 1953 Bowman Tommy Brown really looks great with some ink on it.  Since Brown has such a nice and neat signature, it looks even better than I could have imagined.  I was looking to add some 50s stuff to my album, and saw that Brown was still signing, so I bought the card and sent it along.  I'm glad I did.

Brown (b. 1927) played in the majors in 1944 and 1945 and then from 1947 to 1953 for the Dodgers (Brooklyn), Phillies and Cubs.  He broke into the majors in 1944 at the age of 16, and was done playing by the time he was 25.  He had 309 hits, 31 home runs and a .241 batting average.  Brown remains the youngest MLB player to ever hit a home run when he hit one at the age of 17 years and 257 days.  I can't confirm it, but it looks like he might also be the youngest player ever to get a hit in the majors as well.

I mailed to Brown on March 5 and got the card back signed on March 21, for a 16-day TAT.  He kept my 1952 Bowman that I had bought along with this 53.  Oh well.

Something else, too, I was tagging this post and about to hit submit, when I realized that a tag for Tommy Brown already existed.  It turns out that I had gotten him already back in 2017.  Oops again.  Well, I now have two signed 1953 Bowman of Brown.  They both look great.
