1955 Topps #134 - Joe Jay

Joey Jay (b. 1935) was the first little leaguer to make it to the majors and was one of the first 'bonus babies' when he signed with the Milwaukee Braves at the age of 17. Jay played in the majors from 1953 to 1955 and 1957 to 1966 for the Braves and Reds. He tied for the league lead in wins (21) in 1961 (with Warren Spahn) and would again win 21 wins in 1962. He retired with a career record of 99-91, 999 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.77. He played one game in 1957 for the World Champion Braves. He was also a member of the 1961 Reds team that lost to the Yankees 4 games to 1. THe one game that the Reds won in that series was a game started by Jay (who also picked up the win).
