1955 Topps #129 - Elvin Tappe

Elvin (El) Tappe (b. 1927 - d. 1998) played in the majors for parts of 6 seasons (1954-1956, 1958, 1960 and 1962) for the Cubs. He was also part of the Cub's 'College of Coaches' idea from 1961. In that season, the Cubs used a rotating system of coaches who would alternate as manager. Tappe served as 'head coach' more than any other member of the coaching staff that year. He would also begin the 1962 season in the role of head coach, but after a dismal start to the season, he was replaced and returned to his role of backup catcher. He retired as a player with 63 hits, 0 home runs and a .207 batting average.
